This is project of the reconstruction of the network control centre of electricity- distribution company MOESK. The main space is the control room. There in a space of 320 m2 the we placed a two-level podium made of corian with workstations for six controllers and a wall of video screens. The wall consists of 36 Barco video cubes showing info on the condition of the electricity network.

Other space is decorated laconically. Such decision and dark floor have underlined the dynamical form of a snow-white podium. The wall finish Is perforated BILDEX. The luminescent lamps hidden behind the translucent ceiling – light up the space. Powerful projectors are turned to the workstations.

We just received Zaha Hadid Architects’ latest project for the Manchester International Festival.  ZHA has created a for solo performances of Johann Sebastian Bach’s chamber music masterpieces. The project’s form, a suspended ribbon of translucent lightweight synthetic fabric (150 g/m2) articulated by an internal steel structure, translates the intricate relationships of  Bach’s harmonies into an architectural spatial condition. Festival Director Alex Poots exclaimed, “ consistently come up with challenging and innovative ideas. It has been wonderful to see the realisation of this project and experience such intimate performances from the leading concert musicians within it.”

The design of the music hall ”enhances the multiplicity of Bach’s work through a coherent integration of formal and structural logic.  A single continuous ribbon of fabric swirls around itself, creating layered spaces to cocoon the performers and audience with in an intimate fluid space,” explained Hadid.  The ribbon wraps around the stage, the audience and itself, creating different layered conditions by “alternately compressing to the size of a handrail then stretching to enclose the full height of the room.”

The undulating surface of the fabric shell in a “constant yet changing rhythm” creates a “soft billowing effect”.   When the hall is not in use, programmed lighting and a series of dispersed musical recordings will activate the spaces between the ribbon.
In addition to the strong architectural ideas, the music hall must provide clear acoustics for those viewing the concert. “The challenge of the project was to take a gallery space primarily designed for visual art and help Zaha Hadid Architects in their vision to convert it into a modern extraordinary new performance space for chamber music,” explained Mark Howarth, a partner of Sandy Brown Associates.

“For optimum conditions for chamber music it is important to ensure that the reverberation time is not too long as this blurs individual notes so music can lose its intricacy. Equally it should not be too short as this provides a lack of response for the performer and causes the music to sound overly dry,” explained Howarth.  If ZHA added too much additional sound absorptive material, the sound would loose a lot of its quality.  Thus, a variety of materials were investigated, such as different fabrics, metals and plastics, to ensure that the architectural elements would not take away from the musical experience.

ZHA and Sandy Brown Associates worked together to perfect the acoustics using CAD models that were imported into acoustic modelling software that tested the different finishes and shapes of the curving form.  Through this collaboration, ZHA’s curving ribbon creates both a strong architectural statement and a great acoustic environment as the form helps scatter the sound reflections to eliminate flutter echoes and enhance the acoustic experience of the concert.

World Sustainability Center / Studio Shift

Studio Shift’s proposal for the World Sustainability Center in , Netherlands offers flexible environments to accommodate an educational conservation facility for both students and researchers, as well as the general public.  The strong geometric complex emphasizes different connections on the macro scale, by relating to other major metropolises, infrastructures, educational facilities and park systems, and the micro scale by fusing its own new “sphere of influence” with its immediate community.

Regarded as a “mixing-pot” for the varied educational interests the building hosts, the Center provides an interface for progressive thinking between academic research and the efforts of professionals.  “The landscape and architectural forms present an exhilarating and progressive investigation into emerging technologies while offering a flexible enough environment to accommodate the rapid pace of change inherent in resource conservation research. The Center must define itself as an agglomeration of many entities with common interests and therefore cannot be reflected in a simple, single structure,” explained the architects.

The project takes full advantage of its siting on the Wadden Sea with an educational pier for ecological observation and an actively programmed park to add a new node to the Dutch national park system.   Floating piers with temporary exhibitions educate visitors about emerging sustainable strategies and technologies.  A marina, outdoor amphitheatre and agricultural research garden grace the Lake Ijssel strip with visitors arriving via energy-efficient shuttle buses and watercrafts.
The offices are arranged as research clusters, encouraging collaboration between various disciplines and groups. “There is no distinction made between the facilities of academics and professionals as it is envisioned that they will work side-by-side,” added the architects.  Vertical circulation systems placed within interior gardens maximize social interaction as the shared gardens provide a small gathering space.

he observation tower stands over the submerged lecture hall, and its form provides a variety of framed views of the landscape.  The architects envision the tower as a means to investigate energy-production or serve as a surface for the cultivation of organic food products.

Several key features include a high-performance, operable metal façade shading system that responds in its articulation to the building’s orientation relative to the sun. Façade panels alternate between solid panels (solar), perforated panels (glare and sun control) and void panels (view apertures). Additionally, all hard and soft surfaces including the roofs are optimized for rain water collection and filtration and the lake is used as a heat sink for the cooling system, eliminating the need for specific conventional mechanical equipment.
